With a new year comes a new batch of statistics. Monaco’s City Hall recently released the Civil Status figures for the year 2024.
“As close as possible to Monaco’s population, the Civil Status Nationality Service supports citizens throughout their lives: births, marriages, deaths… each significant event of Monegasque or foreign nationals born, married or deceased in the Principality is recorded in registers, the oldest dating back to the 16th century!” wrote Monaco’s City Hall in a recent press release.
Births
In 2024, 720 births took place at the maternity ward of the Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG), and 1 at home. 360 births were from marital unions (known as “legitimate”), and 361 children were born out of wedlock. 399 boys were born and 322 girls. In 2023, 804 babies were born, or 83 more than in 2024.
Places of residence
Concerning places of residence, 202 births were in families domiciled in Monaco, while the other 519 births concerned parents domiciled outside the Principality, most of them in the municipalities of Menton (195), Beausoleil (49) and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (63).
Rose and Jules are the most popular baby names…
The top 5 most popular first names in 2024 were: Rose, Victoria, Emma, Louise, Angelina and Lina for girls and Jules, Léo, Lorenzo, Noah, Liam, Louis and Raphaël for boys.
Deaths
More than 82% of deaths occurred in hospital in 2024, 5% in clinics and 2% in retirement homes. Among the deceased, 261 were domiciled in Monaco and 248 in neighbouring municipalities. 255 men died and 254 women died for a total 509 people. (538 people died in 2023).
Marriages and divorces
176 marriages were celebrated in the Principality in 2024 (194 in 2023). 6 marriages united two people of Monegasque nationality; 27 Monegasque men married a woman of foreign nationality; 33 Monegasque women chose a foreign spouse; 110 united two people of foreign nationality.
The number of divorces was just slightly higher than last year, with 66 divorces recorded in 2024, all nationalities combined (64 in 2023).
