Monaco’s sports scene has entered a new chapter with the successful debut of the Barracudas, the Principality’s first official roller hockey team. Born from necessity after the closure of Monaco’s ice rink, the team quickly pivoted to roller hockey, and their first official match on October 6, 2024, will be remembered as a historic moment.

The Barracudas took to the rink in the Coupe de France, facing off against Ajaccio, a team playing two divisions above them and widely favoured to win. Despite their underdog status, the Barracudas defied the odds with an incredible 10-9 victory after a tense extra-time showdown. The game, held at the Magnan gymnasium in Nice, was nothing short of thrilling and marked an unforgettable start to the Barracudas’ competitive journey.

Formed after the dissolution of Monaco’s ice hockey section, the team was determined to keep the hockey spirit alive, even without access to an ice rink. Transitioning to roller hockey wasn’t easy for all the players, but it offered a chance to continue the sport they loved in a new format. Technically, there are differences, but the Roller Skating championship is just as interesting. That is the spirit that reflects the team’s excitement for this new challenge.

The success of their debut match has energized the team and the wider Monaco sports community. The victory not only demonstrated the Barracudas’ potential but also highlighted the growth of roller hockey in the Principality. Their entry into the Coupe de France and immediate impact show that roller hockey can thrive in Monaco, providing a fresh outlet for both seasoned players and younger enthusiasts.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, the Barracudas are preparing for the 64th round of the Coupe de France, where they will face another tough opponent. Despite their status as the competition’s underdogs, the team’s president, Fabien Bonilla, is optimistic about their chances, viewing every match as an opportunity for the Barracudas to make a name for themselves in French roller hockey.

This debut victory has set the stage for a promising future, with plans to expand the team and foster youth participation in roller hockey. Weekly sessions for both adults and children are in the works, ensuring that hockey—whether as before on ice and now on wheels—will continue to thrive in Monaco.

With passion, resilience, and an impressive debut win, the Barracudas have solidified roller hockey’s place in the Principality’s sports landscape. As they continue their journey in the Coupe de France, Monaco’s newest team is ready to skate into the future with confidence.
