Victory of the Italian
Monaco, December 4, 2016. The agenda of this third and final day of the Monaco Europa Cup has definitely fulfilled all expectations: 230 regatta participants, 11 nationalities, 5 categories and an east wind going up to 20 knots.
Once again, it was the Laser Standard that opened the competition, with three innings of the day in a row without a false start. In spite of a given line favorable to the sighting boat, no sailor has attempted a port departure. For once, it is the Italian Marco Gallo, great favorite of the regatta, having done two Olympic preparations (in 2012 and 2016), dominated the event from end to end. He was followed by his compatriot Nicolo Villa and then a Russian Maxim Nikolaev.
The fury of youth. “Laser 4.7 Men”, youngest sailors of the event, however, gave the race committee quite a lot of trouble multiplying false starts. General reminders to the shovel allowed to sort in the ranks with many sailors disqualified under a black rule. Francesco Viel won the victory in front of Alessandro Fornasari, followed by Simone Scarpetta. Federica Cattarozziheaded the final general ranking in the same category for women.
Girls taking the first place in “Laser Radial”, mixed sailing for girls and boys, ladies played the same game on the first two races of the day despite tough conditions. The supremacy however remains with Italians as Guido Gallinaro takes the first place, right under the nose of Paolo Giargia and in the face of Jacopo Scornaienghi. In the women’s classification, a Swiss Maud Jayet defeats Carolina Albano and Valentina Balbiwho demonstrated great tactical and technical skills.
Monaco is happy with two sailors from the Sports Section of Y.C.M. entering the Top 10: Jérémy Moutout takes 8th place and Nicolas Rolaz comes 10th. This is an encouraging result for Jérémy who will be flyingto Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday on the occasion of the Youth Sailing World Championship taking place on December 14-20.
A beautiful regatta weekend, under the sign of family traditions. Thus, Thierry Peyre who took part in the last winter regatta of Laser organized in Monaco 17 years ago, a former Y.C.M. sailor, this time competed as a senior while his children Manon and Théo started in Laser 4.7. This proves that this series continues to train and attract new generations of sailors.
