AS Monaco made a resounding statement in their Euroleague opener, securing a commanding 93-80 victory over Olimpia Milan at the Gaston-Médecin arena. The win marks a strong start for the Roca Team, despite missing key players and entering the season with fresh faces.

Returning to the court after summer surgery, Mike James wasted no time getting back into rhythm. With only one team practice under his belt, the star guard instantly made an impact, contributing 9 points and 5 assists in just 18 minutes. He set the tone early, putting Monaco on the front foot as they surged to an 11-2 lead within the first six minutes.

Monaco’s first-half dominance was driven by their sheer control in the paint, collecting 12 offensive rebounds and limiting Milan to just 13 total boards by halftime. Alpha Diallo shined with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Mam Jaiteh added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Their efforts helped the team create a comfortable 47-26 cushion by the break, as Milan struggled with turnovers and poor shooting, especially from beyond the arc (1/8 from three-point range).

Despite a strong rally by Olimpia Milan in the second half, fueled by Armoni Brooks’ 14-point burst, Monaco’s early lead proved too great to overcome. The Italians cut the deficit to 10 points in the fourth quarter (73-63), but the Roca Team held firm to close out the game, maintaining control even through their late-game defensive dip.

Monaco head coach Sasa Obradovic praised the team’s performance, noting the importance of starting the Euroleague campaign with a win at home: “It was a very good match. The team was physically strong, and it was important to secure this victory in front of our supporters.”

Matthew Strazel echoed his coach’s sentiments: “I hope those who had doubts saw the answers tonight. We showed a new side of ourselves.” However, the team remains aware of the need for further improvement, as Mam Jaiteh remarked, “We still have points to work on, but it’s great to start with a win. The atmosphere and mindset in the team are solid, and that’s crucial.”

Monaco will now turn their attention to the domestic clash against Villeurbanne, followed by another Euroleague test next Wednesday when they host Maccabi Tel-Aviv. With James back in action and the team clicking early, the Roca Team is already positioning itself as a force to be reckoned with this season.
