Melrose 7s Drama: Monaco Impis’ Heartbreak and Determination to win the Rugby Championship in 2025

The anticipation was high as the Fédération Monégasque de Rugby (FMR) 7s team, backed by the Princess Charlène Foundation, travelled to Edinburgh to defend their title at the Melrose 7s tournament. Hopes were soaring after a commanding win against Glasgow Accies in their opening match, but fate took a turn as they faced OG7s and suffered a 14-21 defeat.

In this format where every match is like a guillotine, the end can quickly come.

Coach David Bolgashvili, maintaining a positive outlook, expressed the team’s readiness for a potential rematch next year, acknowledging the disappointment of missing out on a consecutive victory. With tournament rules preventing teams from participating after winning twice, Monaco Impis at least get to play again in 2025 for another shot at the prestigious title.

The loss against OG7s was not without its challenges, as the team faced adversity with two yellow cards during the match. No point dwelling on the refereeing!

A disappointing start with three minutes not up to the required level, and suddenly the Impis found themselves chasing.

Despite a later valiant effort and clear chances towards the end, they fell short, leaving them to reflect on what could have been.

Adding to the team’s hurdles was a last-minute roster change, with Dylan Sage being called up to the Blitzboks squad, leading to Fijian Radiani Solo stepping in as a replacement.

The disappointment lingered as Shogun RFC claimed victory in the 2024 edition of the Melrose 7s, defeating the South Barbarians 21-5 in the final. Despite the setbacks, the Monaco Impis remain determined to bounce back stronger in 2025, using this experience as fuel for future success.
