Two of Monaco’s young athletes achieved stellar results at the U16 regional athletics championships at the Tourrettes stadium in Var on 23 June. Six competitors (three girls and three boys) represented Monaco after they qualified for the competition. Célestine Lung won gold and Maxime Connen won both silver and bronze.
The stormy weather couldn’t stop impeccable performances from being achieved. The atmosphere was absolutely electric under heavy skies. The small Tourettes stadium has no stands, so fans and supporters had to brave heavy rains during the exhilarating competition.
Célestine Lung breaks departmental record!
Among the girls, Célestine Lung continued to achieve top performances. She competed in the 120 metre and the Triple Jump. She brilliantly won the 120 metre final to become regional champion with a time of 15”14, improving the U16 department record from 06 and falling just 2 hundredths of a second short of the record for the PACA league. A record that she had beaten in the series with a time of 15’’04, but unfortunately, the winds were too strong for it to be approved.
With her incredible performance, Célestine has validated her selection in the PACA League team for the Coupe de France, which will be held in Dijon on July 14. (The young athlete also got 6th place in the Triple Jump final with a jump measured at 10.52 metres.)
On the boys’ side, Maxime Connen stood out by becoming regional Vice-Champion in the 80 metres with and excellent time of 9”53, improving his record by more than a tenth of a second. At the start of the day, he also climbed onto the 3rd step of the podium in the 200 metre hurdles, also beating his personal record with a very good time of 27”39. He will also be joining the PACA league team during the Coupe de France.
