After being crowned French Champions last season, AS Monaco Volley women’s team is having another incredible season and are currently undefeated. The women’s N2 team, coached by Eva Hamzaoui, was unable to move up to Elite last year for budgetary reasons. But next season might be different and the team is looking to move up to the professional tier.
This season has had 10 matches so far, with 10 victories for the team. Their most recent game against Cannes was attended by Prince Albert II. Over the last two years, the ASM have celebrated an incredible 30 consecutive wins.
After a short break, the team will be back on the court on for a “double feature” on Saturday 22 February at Gymnase des Moneghetti. The N2 women will play at 6pm against Cagnes-sur-Mer and the N2 men will play at 8pm.
Almost 500 members
Combined, AS Monaco Volleyball and Beach Volleyball have 470 members divided into 36 teams. During the pandemic, however, there were only 150 members, meaning that membership has more than tripled in just five years. This year, unfortunately, the club had to refuse about 40 young girls aged 13 to 18 because they had reached full capacity.
Founded in 1952, the Monaco Volleyball Sports Association is affiliated with the Côte d’Azur league and the French volleyball federation. The club’s flagship teams have successfully reached professional levels, with the men’s team playing in Elite (3rd French division) in 2020-2021 and now in National 2, and the women’s team playing in Women’s Elite (2nd French division) in 2017-2018 and 2020-2022, becoming the first professional women’s team in the Principality in 2017.
The club also has a Beach Volleyball division which shines at the national level (women’s pair won a Gold medal in the French Cup in 2017) and international level (Monegasque men’s pair won the European Championship in Scotland in 2019).
