The players had clearly not let the Champions League win in midweek go to their heads. Away at Caen for the final game before the international break, AS Monaco did the job in style with a 3-0 victory. Mbappé once again lit up the game with his class, starting with the first goal, after getting on the end of Jemerson’s lovely long ball and playing a one-two with Germain. The 18 year old prodigy then beat two Caen defenders in the box before firing low past Vercourte (18 mins, 0-1).

The Monegasques were looking solid and barely troubled, and could have doubled their lead late in the first half. First Mbappé and then Lemar were tripped in the area, but the referee waved play on. It was merely a matter of time, though. After the break, Mbappé gave the Normans’ defence the run-around again, dancing away from the tackles with a roulette in the midfield and surging forward on a 40 yard run before being brought down in the box. Fabinho coolly converted from the spot, his 13th penalty from 13 attempts (49 mins, 0-2).

With relentless encouragement from Leonardo Jardim, the players continued to push forward and put the result beyond any doubt ten minutes from time, as Moutinho crossed for Mbappé to head in his second of the game (80 mins, 0-3). The crowd at the Ornano gave Kylian a deserved standing ovation as he left the field. As for AS Monaco, the win rounds off a wonderful week after their Champions League exploits.
