Recently, Prince Albert II, accompanied by actor Mélanie Laurent, visited the ‘Painter and photographer of Prince Albert I, Louis Tinayre in Spitsbergen (1906-1907)’ photography exhibition, which is on display along the gates of the Saint-Martin gardens. The exhibition is part of several events marking the centenary of the death of the ‘Navigator Prince’ organized by the Albert I-2022 Committee.
Prince Albert I of Monaco met Louis Tinayre at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Appreciating his work, he asked the artist to illustrate the third edition of his travelogue ‘The Career of a Navigator’. From 1904, Tinayre was responsible for reporting on all the Prince’s oceanographic campaigns, at sea and on land.
The reporter, painter and photographer’s work will be presented at a retrospective at the Quai Antoine I room this summer, and is also part of the current ‘Polar Mission’ exhibition at the Oceanographic Museum, of which Mélanie Laurent is the godmother.
World Ocean Day: Video Message from Prince Albert II
To celebrate World Ocean Day, Prince Albert II shared a special video message on social media. He reminded viewers of key issues facing the world’s Ocean and upcoming meetings, including the Lisbon Conference (end of June 2022) and COP 15, which will place the Ocean at the heart of collective negotiations.
“The various deadlines ahead of us must be an opportunity to provide responses adapted to the scale and complexity of the oceans and, above all, must be an opportunity to bring together skills, wills and approaches so that we can collectively respond to the immense challenges facing us. I hope that this day will help us to move forward, so that together we can reconcile humanity and the sea around a more sustainable model,” said Prince Albert II in his video message.

Three departments and 14 municipalities are linked as Grimaldi Sites in total.

The artist, who grew up in an isolated village in Sri Lanka with a traditional way of life, has a passion for environmental photography and raising public awareness. The photo was taken on the morning of 5 January 2022, near a forest in Oluvil. In the centre of the image, an elephant is curled up in pain. When the photographer approached the animal to take the picture, he observed tears in his eyes, due to the surrounding polyethylene (plastic) waste.
