Who is representing Monaco at the Olympics?

The Monegasque Olympic Committee officially unveiled all five athletes who will be representing Monaco during the upcoming Paris Olympics. Prince Albert II, who is President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee and Princess Charlene attended the event, which was held at the Yacht Club on 27 June.

The five athletes are: Lisa Pou (swimming), Théo Druenne (swimming), Quentin Antognelli (rowing), Xiaoxin Yang (table tennis) and Marie-Charlotte Gastaud (running). Lisa Pou and Théo Druenne will be Team Monaco’s flag-bearers.

Prince Albert II acknowledged the work and passion that each and every athlete took to achieve this level of performance. He said that throughout the exciting days of competition, the people of Monaco will be by each athlete’s side to support them as they represent the Principality.

Quentin Antognelli will be the first from Team Monaco to compete at the Paris Olympics on 27 July, the day after the opening ceremony, in Vaires-sur-Marne at 9 a.m.. On the same day, Xiaoxin Yang will compete in the table tennis preliminaries, which commence at 3 p.m. at the Arena Paris Sud. Théo Druenne will swim the 800m men’s freestyle on 29 July at 11 a.m. at La Défense Arena. Marie-Charlotte Gastaud will run the 100 metres on 2 August at 10:35 a.m. at the stadium de France in Saint-Denis. Lisa Pou will round things up with the 10 km women’s, taking place along the Seine, starting at Pont Alexandre III, on 8 August at at 7:30 a.m.

Not the First Olympics for Team Monaco in Paris…

In 1924, Paris was chosen to host the VIII Summer Olympic Games. At the opening ceremony, over three thousand athletes representing forty-four countries gathered in the French capital, including seven Monegasque athletes. The 1924 Games resulted in Monaco winning its first and only medal ever to date! Julien Médecin won a bronze medal for his stadium project in Fontvieille.
