A new publication concerning violence against women in Monaco was recently released by the IMSEE (Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies). Produced every year with the support of the Women’s Rights Commission, the information was collected by the IMSEE from various institutions in the Principality.
Police Reports
In 2024, 60 cases of violence committed against women in 2024 were recorded by the Police services, compared to 68 in 2023. In more than 75% of cases, the alleged perpetrator was known by the victim. Almost one in three cases involved a spouse or ex-spouse. Three men were also victims of violence by their spouse or ex-spouse during the year.
The average age of the female victims of violence was 35 years old and the average age of perpetrators was 44 years old. More than a quarter of the reported cases involved sexual violence, including rape.
Judicial cases
According to information from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, 32 cases concerning violence against women were opened in 2024, compared to 35 in 2023. To date, 4 cases led to a conviction and 6 of the cases opened in 2024 were dismissed. Out of the 35 cases opened in 2023, 8 convictions have been handed down and 13 cases have been dismissed.
Victims of violence recorded at the Princess Grace Hospital Centre in 2024
In 2024, 150 women admitted to a hospital department reported having suffered violence. 74% of the women experienced physical violence, 25% psychological violence and 6% sexual violence, including rape. The victims were 36 years old on average.
Victims of violence received by the Association for Assistance to Victims of Criminal Offences
In 2024, 45 female victims of violence were received by the association, including 38 for acts committed during the year. Two men were also received by the association in 2024 compared to 5 in 2023. In nearly half of the cases, the violence was committed by the victim’s spouse or ex-spouse (no similar cases reported among men).
