Top 7 Monaco Princely News: Riviera Water Bike Challenge in aid of Princess’s Charlene Foundation

Princess Charlene presented awards to RWBC winners

Prince Albert of Monaco and Princess Charlene of Monaco were at “Riviera Water Bike Challenge” (RWBC) held at Monaco Yacht Club on June 4, 2017. RWBC is a 21 km relay race between Nice and Monaco and held for the first time this year. Prince Albert joined the race as a contester. Princess Charlene could not join the race because of a light injury in her wrist, she watched the race and presented awards to the winners. Prince Albert joined 10 teams of five people to participate in the competition, including famous athletes such as German Formula One World Champion, Nico Rosberg, and South African former rugby player, Percy Montgomery.

Highly regarded as a world premier sporting event, the challenge was held in support of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation to support the foundation’s work with children. All the money raised for the Foundation is going directly to cover the building costs of an Aquatic Centre in Burkina Faso, the first of its kind in Africa. The new centre has been designed by the Monaco Red Cross and the Burkina Red Cross, and it will aim to save lives in the water through a series of classes on ‘Water Safety’ and ‘Learning to Swim’. Both of these are programs that prevent many deaths from drowning.

There were two sports personalities peddling on each team, plus two places available for amateurs, which were selected by raffle last month. The water bike was developed by American Judah Schiller reportedly as a dare. It uses an optimized propeller, proprietary gear box and Gates Carbon Drive belts and can reach an average speed of 10mph in calm waters.

First to the finish arrived the team of Foundation of Xavier Mora, which consisted of such great sportsmen as rugbyman Percy Montgomery and South African swimmer Ryk Neethling, who at the same time is an ambassador of Princess’s Charlene Foundation.
