Legendary player, Marat Safin, is making his official coaching debut at this year’s Rolex Monte Carlo Masters, coaching Andrey Rublev. Taking place from 5-13 April 2025, the Monte Carlo Masters is where Rublev won the 2023 title and reached the 2021 final. Safin has joined Fernando Vicente on Rublev’s coaching team. The pair plan to work together until at least Roland Garros.

The new coach is already off to a splendid start. Andrey Rublev returned to his winning ways at UTS Nimes on Friday, in a match against Ben Shelton, with a 2-1 victory. Marat Safin, a former world Number 1 from Russia and two-time Grand Slam winner is one of Rublev’s childhood heroes.

Safin decided to coach Rublev after the 27-year-old, who has openly spoken about his struggles with depression and mental health, reached out to him for advice at a particularly difficult moment. The duo both hail from Moscow and both attended the Spartak Tennis Club as juniors. Marat Safin, who is 45 years old, retired from tennis in 2019.

In a press interview in Nimes on 4 April 2025, Andrey Rublev said that he thinks Marat Safin can help him, but he cannot be specific because they only started working a few days ago. Rublev also said that Safin is someone who makes him see himself in an honest way. Safin then said that success will depend on Rublev and that although Safin can show him the road, Safin has to walk it.

Monte Carlo is where Andrey Rublev had his most successful Masters tournament. He reached the finals in 2021 and was crowned champion in 2023.

The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters has announced that the 2025 prize money total will be just over €6.1 million. The singles champion will be awarded €946,610. The winning doubles team will split €290,410.
