It’s the home stretch for the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival and the eleventh annual event will continue through Saturday. In this last week, the programming is exciting and eclectic, with true jazz legends, the up and coming icons of a younger generation … and even singer-songwriter Robert Charlebois, a prominent musical artist, though not normally linked to jazz. There are so many excellent reasons to head to the Opera Garnier this week.
Reason 1: To hear legends like these…
November 29th featured the mighty Al Jarreau and the NDR Bigband, who had come to present their Duke Ellington Songbook. The Wisconsin man has already garnered seven Grammy Awards and is a loyal supporter of the Summer Sporting nights. Yet another legend will appear Thursday night, the Wayne Shorter Quartet,led by the man who previously accompanied Miles Davis and who brings a long history of jazz with him, having celebrated his 80th birthday in August 2013.
Reason 2:To see the icons of the next generation
He does it all: he was one of the coaches on the show La Nouvelle Star, he’s a columnist…. And tonight, André Manoukian will take part in a duo of piano and voice with the British singer Malia, for whom he has already written three albums. Tomorrow, Ibrahim Maalouf, icon of jazz today, will come to celebrate female artists. And Friday, all eyes and ears will be on Manu Katché, the legendary drummer.
Reason 3: To witness a “Francophone myth”
Although not officially a jazz musician, it is because he is recognised as “one of the myths of the Francophonie,” and that “jazz is open to all influences,”says Jean-René Palacio, artistic director of the SBM, that Robert Charlebois will come to close this 11th edition of the event. The Québécois native with a career spanning 50 years promises an entertaining electro-acoustic concert.
