Prince Albert II presents the Gold Medal for Rowing and visits the Olympic Village

One hundred years after John B. Kelly Sr., the grandfather of Prince Albert II, won his third Olympic gold medal in rowing in Paris, the Prince presented the medals to the winners of the double sculls at the Vaires-sur-Marne water sports stadium on Thursday 1 August. Representing Romania, A.S. Cornea and M. Enache climbed onto the highest step of the podium, ahead of silver medalists M. Twellaar and S. Broenink (Netherlands) and the bronze medalists D. Lynch and P. Doyle (Ireland).

Prince Albert II visits the Olympic Village

The Sovereign visited the Olympic Village in Saint-Denis on Monday, after swimmer Théo Druenne’s race (800 metre freestyle). The Prince toured the apartments where Monaco’s delegation is staying. He spoke to each one of the athletes, coaches and managers before having lunch with the entire delegation in the Village restaurant.

According to the Prince, it’s a beautiful Village, which he’s already had the opportunity to witness several presentations about through his role within the International Olympic Committee. The Prince stated that there are many fantastic buildings that are well-constructed and will remain in use after the Games.The village is situated in a former industrial zone and everything is geared for the stay and preparation of the athletes, with training centres and more, so all the delegations can live the special, beautiful and unique experience of the Games.

Quentin Antognelli in the D final

In the rowing C/D semi-finals, Quentin Antognelli did not manage to finish in the top three. The race was won by USA’s Plihal (6:56.96), ahead of the Bulgaria’s Vasilev (6:57.75) and Paraguay’s Insfran (7:00.93), who qualified for the C final. Quentin Antognelli came in an honourable 5th (7:14.32). The Monegasque Olympian will participating in the D final on Friday, competing for a ranking between 19th and 24th place.

Marvin Gadeau (judo) and Marie-Charlotte Gastaud (track) are up next!

A busy day for Team Monaco on Friday: rowing (final D for Quentin Antognelli), judo (+100kg) and track (100 metre) on the program.

Marvin Gadeau will be competing in judo (+100kg) starting at 10:00 am at the Arena Champ-de-Mars. He will face Cuba’s Andy Granda, none other than the 2022 world champion. Aware that the task will not be easy, Gadeau remains positive and stated that although he is not the favourite, he will give it his all.

Marie-Charlotte Gastaud will be competing on the track, starting at 10:35 am, at the Stade de France. The sprinter will compete in the 100 metre preliminaries (series 4). On Thursday, the athlete took advantage of the training slot at the Stade de France for a test session, which allowed her to get a feel for the site. Good luck to all our athletes!
