Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene officially inaugurated the new SPA animal shelter, located in the commune of Peille, on Monday 16 September. Princess Charlene is the President of the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) of Monaco.
The ceremony took place in the presence of the Mayor of Peille, Cyril Piazza, as well as other Monegasque and French authorities and employees of the SPA of Monaco. The event marked a key step in the Principality’s commitment to abandoned and mistreated animals.
Built in just 24 months in the heart of a natural area, at an altitude of 700 metres, this shelter is a true haven for animals in distress. It can accommodate up to 40 dogs, including 6 in quarantine, and around 50 cats, including 7 in quarantine. People can also come in without an appointment, to adopt pets and birds.
The buildings which once housed the Monaco SPA shelter, named ‘l’Abri’ in Serriers, had become too cramped and dilapidated. The Monaco SPA and the Prince’s Government worked to find an ideal place to build the new shelter, which is now equipped with modern and environmentally responsible technology.
Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene laid the first stone
The inauguration took place two years after the laying of the first stone by the Sovereign Prince and Princess Charlene, on 12 September 2022. The ceremony was also an opportunity to announce the Presidency of HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco as the head of the SPA of Monaco.
Princess Charlene regularly checked in on the new shelter as it was being built. Committed to the well-being of animals, Princess Charlene has been working for several years through her Foundation, in particular, for the protection of the rhinoceroses and supporting the South African SPA.
