In a landmark move underscoring its dedication to environmental stewardship, the Principality of Monaco has officially joined the Space for Climate Observatory (SCO), an international initiative leveraging space technologies to combat climate change. The formal accession took place during the SCO’s third congress on March 20, 2025, at the Ministerial Conference Center in Paris. H.E. Valérie Bruell-Melchior, Monaco’s Ambassador to France, signed the charter in the presence of representatives from Monaco’s Department of External Relations and Cooperation and the Monaco Office for Space Affairs.

The SCO, established in 2019, aims to coordinate global efforts in utilizing satellite data for climate monitoring, mitigation, and adaptation. By integrating satellite observations with socio-economic and environmental data, the SCO develops operational tools to support decision-makers in addressing climate-related challenges.

Monaco’s membership in the SCO signifies a substantial advancement in its climate action initiatives. This collaboration enables the Principality to tap into an extensive network of international partners and expertise in space technologies, enhancing its capacity to understand and anticipate climate change impacts. Such a partnership is particularly valuable as Monaco strives to support developing nations in their climate change mitigation efforts, aligning with its international commitments.

This development builds upon Monaco’s ongoing collaboration with France’s National Centre for Space Studies (CNES). On November 14, 2023, a framework partnership agreement was signed between the Prince’s Government and CNES, focusing on utilizing space-based solutions and technologies to bolster economic development, foster innovation, and protect the environment. The agreement encompasses three primary areas: promoting space solutions for Monaco’s economy, addressing public policy and societal issues through space technologies, and enhancing scientific and technological skills.

By joining the SCO and strengthening ties with CNES, Monaco demonstrates its proactive approach to addressing climate change through international cooperation and technological innovation. These strategic partnerships reflect the Principality’s commitment to leveraging advanced space technologies for environmental preservation and sustainable development.
