Oktoberfest in Monaco at Cafe de Paris 14th to 23rd October

The Société des Bains de Mer will celebrate “Oktoberfest” in pure Bavarian tradition, in partnership with the Weihenstephan Brewery. Founded in 1040 by Benedictine monks, Weihenstephan will bring its know-how and the inimitable touch of authenticity. You will be transported beyond the borders of the Principality, where gastronomy and traditional food meets quality beer.

Historically, Oktoberfest (“feast of October” in German) is a beer festival that takes place in Munich, Germany. Nowadays, the festival begins on the first Saturday of the second half of September at noon exactly, and ends on the first Sunday in October unless it is on 1 or 2 October, in which case the holiday is extended until 3. It therefore lasts sixteen to eighteen days.

Oktoberfest - beer festival. Celebration

The Oktoberfest takes place near the center of Munich, in an open area of 42 hectares. This site is called Theresienwiese (Therese’s Meadow) and often shortened by the Bavarians in die Wiesn, “the meadow”. By extension, the term also refers to the general celebration. To preserve the family character of the festival, a carnival and eateries are installed around the tents. The Oktoberfest is the biggest fair in the world.

The Festival was Created on 17th October, 1810 during celebrations that followed the wedding of the future King Ludwig 1st of Bavaria to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on the 12th October, 1810.

In 2013, it attracted 6.4 million visitors in sixteen days. The festival begins with a parade of more than eight thousand people wearing the traditional costumes of leather pants for men and dresses with puffed sleeves and apron of bright colors (Dirndl) for women. The public gathers in large festive tent where they can drink beer while listening to music. About 6 million liters are drunk each year.

German beer is sold in fourteen giant tents mounted and decorated for the occasion, as well as in smaller tents and the “beer gardens”. Beer is served in a Mass, which are 1 litre mugs. In the tents, bands perform songs and traditional Bavarian music. Generally, the crowd stand on benches, and join in the chorus’s.
