Stamps, Stories, and Shamrocks: Monaco’s Regal Homage to Princess Grace’s Irish Legacy

The Principality of Monaco geared up this year for a unique cultural celebration that intertwines history, heritage, and art. And this September, the tiny Mediterranean state will mark the 40th anniversary of the Princess Grace Irish Library with the release of a special commemorative stamp, a fitting tribute to the cultural institution that has become one of Monaco’s cherished gems.

A Tribute in PhilatelySet to be released on September 4th, this limited-edition stamp honours the legacy of Princess Grace of Monaco, known for her deep ties to Ireland through her paternal ancestry. The stamp, priced at 1.96 euros, will be available in several locations including the Museum of Stamps and Coins and post offices across the Principality, as well as the Carré d’Encre in Paris. A limited print run of 40,000 copies ensures that this stamp will be a prized possession for collectors and admirers of Princess Grace alike.

Monaco Rugby Sevens kicked off their campaign in the In Extenso Supersevens tournament with some cliff-hanging performances, securing third place in Mont-de-Marsan. This nail-biting early success in the first round signals their intent to be a force in the competition once again, hopefully dominant following their triumph in 2022.

Led by their head coach, James Kent, and bolstered by an impressive roster of international stars, the team faced a challenging path to the podium. Their opening match against Vannes was a nail-biter, with the Monegasques narrowly avoiding an upset. Despite a sluggish start and being down at halftime, they managed to pull through, thanks to a last-minute try by Rosco Syster, clinching a 17-12 victory. That was scary and the win a big relief.

Noam Yaron is preparing to take on a major, record-breaking challenge: swimming across the Mediterranean from Calvi to Monaco. The 180 kilometre swim is planned to be accomplished without leaving the water over three days and three nights. Never has so much distance been covered in the water by a human and it will be dangerous. The swim is set to commence at the end of this week, weather permitting. It will be supervised by a team responsible for monitoring his health and his supplies.

“Between the storms and the waves reaching two metres, we’ll see if I can begin on schedule,” said Noam Yaron.

The event will begin on Thursday, January 30, just four days after the conclusion of the 93rd Monte-Carlo Rally.

The 2025 edition is planned by the Automobile Club of Monaco to be even more attractive with, as usual, a majority of Regularity Stages (RS) that have helped to write the event’s great history!

Competitors will be battling it out for overall victory, in a bid to dethrone Michel Decremer and Jennifer Hugo, winners of the 2024 event in their 1979 Opel Ascona 400.

The historic version of Rallye Monte-Carlo is reserved to cars that took part in former editions of Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo, and in 2025 to models having raced between 1911 and 1983.
