Prince Albert II, Princess Charlene, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella attended the extraordinary opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games, which took place along the Seine, on Friday 26 July. For the first time in Summer Olympic history, the opening ceremony took place outside of a stadium. Nearly 7,000 athletes (out of the 10,500 in total) paraded on 85 boats in the colours of over 200 delegations. Mixing art and sport, the ceremony put the emblematic monuments of the City of Lights, from the Austerlitz Bridge to the Eiffel Tower, in the spotlight while using creativity, inclusivity and sustainability.
Almost 326,000 people gathered along the 6 km route of the river parade, punctuated by twelve thematic presentations. Monaco was on the same boat as Mexico, the Federated States of Micronesia and Moldova. The Principality’s delegation donned red and white sailor shirts, red jackets and red berets for the women and Panama hats with red bands for the men. Celine Dion and Lady Gaga performed during the memorable event.
