The streets of Monaco were alive with the hum of bike tires and the cheers of spectators as the fourth edition of the Beking Monaco Criterion unfolded on a rainy Sunday, 24 November 2024. This annual event, spearheaded by Italian cyclist Matteo Trentin, brought together professional riders, amateurs, and cycling enthusiasts for a day that was as much about community and sustainability as it was about elite competition.

Victory in the Rain

Under a gloomy sky, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) added another chapter to his legendary 2024 season, winning the pro race ahead of Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla). The Slovenian, wearing his rainbow jersey as the reigning world champion, crossed the finish line with a one-second lead, sealing a victory that was both hard-fought and symbolic.

“Beking is truly a fantastic event and I’m always happy to be part of it every year,” said Pogačar after his win. “Even though the weather wasn’t ideal, the race was still fun. I’m especially happy to have won here because we don’t race in Monaco very often. It’s always a special experience. I’m grateful to Matteo and the whole team for continuing to organise this event for such an important cause. It’s inspiring to see so many people in the rain showing their support and helping to spread the message.”

The race itself was a battle of skill and strategy. Early on, a group of eight riders, including Jakob Fuglsang and Clément Champoussin, broke away. Sensing danger, Trentin and Pogačar counterattacked, rejoining the front group. By the penultimate lap, the final showdown had emerged: Pogačar, Pedersen, and Matthews. The Slovenian surged ahead in the closing moments, earning a triumphant win on a wet and slippery course.
