Monaco, the dazzling jewel of the French Riviera, has been named the Best European Destination for 2025, securing the top spot in the prestigious ranking by European Best Destinations. With over 115,000 votes, the Principality outshone some of the continent’s most iconic locations, including Amsterdam, Madrid, and Lisbon.
A Well-Deserved Win

After placing second in 2024, Monaco ascended to first place this year, earning the admiration of global travellers. This recognition marks a historic achievement, as no other French-speaking city has held the title since Bordeaux in 2015. Over 1.2 million people from 158 countries participated in the voting process, demonstrating Monaco’s international appeal.

European Best Destinations hailed Monaco as “a perfect blend of sustainability, luxury, culture, gastronomy, wellness, sport, and year-round events,” offering an unparalleled travel experience. The award reflects the Principality’s ongoing commitment to excellence, with extensive renovations, innovative initiatives, and an ever-evolving tourism industry keeping the destination at the top of its game.

What Sets Monaco Apart?

Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the French Alps, Monaco is synonymous with sophistication and exclusivity. Home to world-class hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, and a vibrant cultural scene, the city-state seamlessly combines modernity with tradition. Visitors can experience the thrill of the Monaco Grand Prix, the opulence of the Monte Carlo Casino, and the tranquility of the Exotic Garden—all within a compact yet stunning 2.1-square-kilometer area.

Sustainability also plays a key role in Monaco’s tourism strategy. The government has implemented eco-friendly initiatives, such as electric public transport and green energy investments, ensuring that the city remains as sustainable as it is luxurious.

A Global Recognition

The Director of Tourism and Conventions, Guy Antognelli, credited the victory to the tireless work of the Principality’s tourism professionals, hospitality experts, and public services. “This award is a testament to the dedication and innovation of those who make Monaco an exceptional place to visit. It is proof that our continuous efforts to enhance quality and service are bearing fruit.”

In addition to Monaco’s top ranking, other celebrated destinations included Riga (Latvia), Dubrovnik and Cavtat (Croatia), Madrid (Spain), and Amsterdam (Netherlands). Notably, two charming French coastal towns, Èze and Cassis, also secured spots in the top 20, further highlighting the Riviera’s allure.
