Monaco’s nightlife is about to get a nostalgic yet fresh revival as the iconic Moods venue reopens under a new concept. Located beneath the Café de Paris, the revamped “New Moods” will make its grand debut on November 30, 2024, with Prince Albert II of Monaco attending the inaugural event. Once a popular haunt that closed its doors in 2011 due to financial struggles, Moods is now back, ready to reclaim its place in the heart of Monaco’s social scene.

The resurrection of this legendary spot, after a decade of silence, aims to blend the charm of its musical past with a modern, multifaceted offering. Live music will remain central to its identity, but this time, comedy shows will be added to the lineup, creating a cabaret-style atmosphere. The venue will be open three nights a week—Thursday, Friday, and Saturday—during the cooler months from October to March. “We’re aiming to create an experience that resonates both with those who remember the original Moods and a new generation of visitors,” explained Stéphane Valeri, deputy president of Société des Bains de Mer (SBM).

Balancing Nostalgia with Financial Pragmatism

While the return of Moods has been eagerly awaited, it is clear that the relaunch is being handled with caution, learning from the financial pitfalls of the past. During its first run, Moods was losing up to one million euros annually, forcing its closure in just two years. This time, SBM is taking a more strategic approach to ensure sustainability.

To cut costs, New Moods will operate on a more limited schedule, only opening during the autumn and winter months when visitors are more likely to enjoy an indoor venue. Furthermore, staffing will be shared with other nightlife establishments owned by SBM, such as Jimmy’z and La Rascasse. Frédéric Darnet, general manager of Monte-Carlo Bay, has been tasked with streamlining operations to ensure the venue breaks even.

Additionally, the space will be available for private events throughout the year. Companies and individuals alike can rent New Moods for birthdays, anniversaries, or even corporate events tied to major Monaco fixtures like the Grand Prix or the Monaco Yacht Show.

A Star-Studded Culinary Experience

The culinary offering is set to be a major draw for New Moods, with two-starred chef Marcel Ravin, the mastermind behind Mada One, curating the menu. He promises a finger food selection that will “probably be the best in the world,” adding a gourmet edge to the venue’s casual yet chic atmosphere. Guests can enjoy an after-work experience with free entry from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., though later in the evening, a minimum spend of 50 euros will be required.

Looking Forward: A New Era for Monaco’s Nightlife

As Moods prepares for its revival, the buzz in Monaco is palpable. The venue’s transformation into a modern entertainment hub—combining live music, comedy, and top-tier cuisine—offers a dynamic addition to Monaco’s nightlife. With a rich history behind it and a carefully calculated business strategy, New Moods is poised to thrive in its second act, appealing to both locals and international visitors seeking a quintessential Monegasque night out.

This reopening marks not just the return of a beloved venue, but the beginning of a new chapter for Monaco’s cultural and social life.
