The tournament, organized by the Monegasque Rugby Federation and supported by the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, once again proved to be much more than a competition — it was a true celebration of youth, sportsmanship, and international friendship. This year’s edition welcomed 24 teams from 21 countries, uniting children from all over the world under the values of rugby: discipline, respect, and camaraderie.

Princess Charlene, President of the Monegasque Rugby Federation, attended the opening ceremony despite having only just returned from the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome. Accompanied by her brother Gareth Wittstock, Vice-President of the Federation, and rugby legend Tendai Mtawarira, Princess Charlene stood in solidarity with the players and spectators as a moving minute of silence was observed in memory of the late pontiff. The atmosphere was solemn yet filled with hope, setting a poignant tone for the competition to follow.

Beyond the thrilling matches, the tournament paid tribute to the dedication of the local rugby community. Six long-standing volunteers from ASM Rugby were honoured during the ceremony, highlighting the heart and soul behind the scenes of Monaco’s growing rugby scene.

The Young Monegasques

On the field, Monaco’s team shone brightly during the first day of the tournament but faced tougher challenges against Switzerland on the second. Ultimately, the young Monegasques proudly claimed the prestigious Sainte Dévote Trophy, achieving one of their main objectives for the weekend, and finished sixth overall in the tournament standings.

Throughout the two days, the level of play captivated spectators and participants alike. Thierry Danthez, Vice-President of the Federation would have enjoyed seeing the evolution of the standard of play yet again in 2025 and seeing these young players from around the world showcasing such skill and passion. Tendai Mtawarira, the World Cup-winning Springbok praised the tournament’s reputation as a new reference in junior rugby.

Princess Charlene’s unwavering commitment to youth sport and safety remained at the heart of the event. Earlier, she had helped raise awareness about drowning prevention for over a hundred children at the Louis II pool — a cause closely linked to her Foundation’s mission.
