By mid-2025, Monaco will launch an innovative medical service designed to provide residents with round-the-clock healthcare outside regular hours. Inspired by France’s SOS Médecin system, this initiative promises to address urgent medical needs during nights, weekends, and public holidays, while easing the strain on the Principality’s emergency rooms.
A Solution for Better Medical Coverage
Christophe Robino, Minister of Social Affairs and Health, explained the rationale behind the service. Currently, outside of visiting the emergency room, there is no medical on-call service in the Principality. This new system aims to fill that gap by offering a home-based on-call service from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on weekdays, as well as throughout weekends and holidays.
Relieving Emergency Services
The core objective of the initiative is to ensure that residents can access timely care for non-urgent conditions without resorting to the emergency room. This system should allow emergency departments to focus on serious cases while minor illnesses are treated effectively at home.
Robino has emphasized that this activity will not interfere with daytime city clinics or hospital services. Instead, it is targeted to provide additional coverage during off-hours and reduce unnecessary hospital visits.
Volunteers Stepping Forward
Several local doctors have apparently already volunteered to support the program, though the exact number remains undisclosed.
A Principality-Focused Service
In a bid to maintain efficiency, the new service will operate exclusively within Monaco’s borders.
Launch Timeline
While organizational challenges remain, the Prince’s government is committed to having the system in place by mid-2025. Once operational, it will mark a significant step forward in enhancing healthcare accessibility in Monaco and ensuring that residents have reliable, on-demand medical care during critical hours.
This initiative underscores Monaco’s dedication to improving the well-being of its residents while modernizing its healthcare infrastructure.
