Condamine Market Facelift: Fresh Produce, Fresh Organization, Same Unique Charm

Monaco’s Condamine Market, a historic and cherished part of the community, is on the brink of significant transformation. Slated for completion in 2026, the renovation of this iconic marketplace promises to balance modernity with tradition, ensuring that it remains a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.

The renovation plans, highlighted by Mayor Georges Marsan in the municipal magazine *Vivre ma ville*, stem from the need to upgrade the market’s aging infrastructure, which dates back to 2012. “Our technical installations no longer meet today’s needs,” Marsan stated. This necessity has paved the way for a broader vision—one that seeks not only to update the market’s facilities but also to breathe new life into its very structure.

At the heart of the project is a careful reimagining of the market’s layout. The goal is to create more inviting and accessible spaces, particularly during peak times when finding a seat can be a challenge. The plan calls for a reorganization of traders’ booths to enhance the market’s convivial atmosphere while preserving its essential function as a retail space. Importantly, the market gardeners, who have long been a fixture in the square, will continue to occupy their established stalls, maintaining the market’s unique character and connection to its roots.

However, while the internal structure of the market is set to evolve, the external facades will remain untouched, respecting the building’s historical significance. “Defending our heritage does not mean being anchored in the past,” Marsan emphasized, reflecting a commitment to blending the old with the new in a way that honours Monaco’s architectural legacy.

The municipality has enlisted the expertise of a specialized design firm, known for its work on renowned markets, to ensure that the renovation respects the site’s unique qualities. Initial site visits took place in July, marking the start of a meticulous planning process that aims to optimize the market’s functionality without sacrificing its soul.

Deputy Mayor François Lallemand, who is overseeing the project, echoed the mayor’s sentiments, stressing the importance of forward-thinking and careful planning. “We are currently assessing the scope of the work and exploring various renovation options to make the market even more user-friendly,” he noted. The technical and architectural plans are expected to be finalized next year, with construction commencing in 2026.

As Monaco looks to the future, the Condamine Market renovation is poised to play a central role in the evolving landscape of the Principality. While the district’s retail offerings are set to change with the modernization of the Fontvieille shopping center, the market will remain the beating heart of the community—a place where tradition and modernity meet in perfect harmony.

The Condamine Market

For over 120 years, the Condamine Market has been a must-see place for life and commerce in the Principality. It is the popular heart of the Principality.

Located on the Place d’Armes, in the Condamine shopping district and a stone’s throw from the Port of Monaco, the market is open every day.

The market hall brings together the stalls of butchers, bakers, delicatessens, etc. offering local products as well as Monegasque and regional specialties. Outside, there is a fishmonger, fruit and vegetable producers, and florists.
