On August 29, 2024, a groundbreaking educational partnership was signed at the Palais de Justice, marking the inception of a new Interuniversity Degree (IUD) in Monegasque Law. This unique program results from a collaboration between the Monegasque Institute for Training in the Legal Professions (IMFPJ) and the faculties of law and political science at Université Côte d’Azur and Université Aix-Marseille. The agreement was officially signed by Sylvie Petit-Leclair, Secretary of Justice, and Professor Jeanick Brisswalter, President of Université Côte d’Azur, in the presence of key figures such as Professor Yves Strickler, Scientific Director of the IMFPJ and the project’s initial proponent, and Professor Jean-Baptiste Perrier, who has been appointed to lead the program in Aix-en-Provence.
This new three-year degree, set to commence in fall 2024, provides law students at Université de Nice and Université Aix-en-Provence an opportunity to study Monegasque law alongside their regular degree programs. Starting in 2025, Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas will also join the partnership, expanding the program’s reach and impact.
The Interuniversity Degree in Monegasque Law aims to furnish students with a comprehensive understanding of Monegasque legal principles and institutions. It offers a robust educational foundation for those aspiring to work in or with the Principality of Monaco. The curriculum is designed to enhance students’ ability to transition smoothly between different legal systems and improve their knowledge of the standards specific to Monaco. This will better prepare them for successful integration into the Monegasque job market and ensure they are well-equipped to develop their legal practices within the Principality.
Competitive Edge in the Monegasque Legal Market
The new diploma, which emerged from a partnership agreement signed in 2021 between the Université Côte d’Azur and the IMFPJ, guarantees its graduates a competitive edge in the Monegasque legal market. For students in initial training, it enhances their employability by ensuring they are immediately effective in their roles within Monaco. Those engaged in continuing education will gain a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of Monaco’s legal framework, better positioning them for career advancement.
Overall, this initiative represents a significant milestone in legal education and highlights the importance of Monegasque law on a broader academic stage.
