With the Monegasques looking all set to claim a good point away at Lyon, there was a cruel twist late on as they were beaten right at the death.
It was a cruel way for the game to end. With the match looking on course to end in a 2-2 draw that would have been a fair result in a high tempo encounter, Nabil Fekir snatched victory for Lyon from a direct free-kick in the last second of the game. Leonardo Jardim’s men had put on a fine display, despite a raft of changes to the side following the international break, digging deep to come from behind twice to equalise.
Rony Lopes (17’) and Adama Traoré with a stunning top-corner effort (34’) put the Red & Whites in position to search for the winner and they came close to finding one, as the Malian midfielder (64’), Balde (56’) and Tielemans (87’) all had chances to put the visitors ahead.
In the end, though, the final word went to Fekir in the dying moments of the game. The result sees Lyon move back up to third in the table, three points behind AS Monaco, who will need to put their disappointment behind them and focus on Tuesday night’s Champions League vital clash with Besiktas.
