Appointment of Mr. Eric ARELLA as Head of Monaco’s Public Security Directorate

Mr. Eric ARELLA will succeed Mr. Richard MARANGONI as Controller in charge of the Public Security Directorate on September 9, 2024. Mr. MARANGONI, who has held this position for eight years, will be appointed Special Advisor to the Government Counselor-Minister of the Interior, Lionel Beffre on the same date.

Lionel Beffre – Minister of the Interior

The new minister of the Interior, Lionel Beffre, is in the process of arriving in the Principality. He brings with him many years of distinguished service. A graduate of the Institut d’études politiques de Paris and the Ecole nationale d’administration, Lionel Beffre previously held the senior positions of Director of Administration at the Paris Prefecture, Head of the Prime Minister’s Private Office, and Prefect of Lot-et-Garonne, Eure-et-Loir and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. He subsequently served as High Commissioner for French Polynesia, Prefect of Isère and then Seine-et-Marne, and most recently as Chief of Staff to the Minister for French Overseas Territories.

Eric Arella – New Controller in charge of the Public Security Directorate

Mr. Eric ARELLA, who became a police commissioner at the age of 23, has had a distinguished career within the French National Police, including over 37 years in the judicial police. He has been widely praised for his professionalism and integrity, having held positions such as Regional Director of Judicial Police in Ajaccio, Director of the Regional Judicial Police Service in Marseille, and Zonal Director of the Southern Judicial Police. In 2023, he was appointed to coordinate inter-directorate and service missions for the construction of the new police headquarters in Marseille.

With this extensive experience and the long-standing cooperation between the judicial police services he has led and the Public Security Directorate, he will bring his expertise, dynamism, and determination to serve the security and quality of life of the Monegasque population.

During his career within the Public Security Directorate, Mr. Richard MARANGONI rose through the ranks to take the lead in February 2016. He has contributed to evolving its structure, modes of operation, and adaptability to the changing nature of crime and the environment. His experience, particularly in human resources, will be a key asset in his new cross-functional mission.
