Monaco’s Winter Carnival had an extraordinary theme this year. People of all ages gathered to celebrate on 28 February at the Marché de la Condamine, with some special guests with super powers! Many masked heroes were in attendance…including Batman!

The Winter Carnival, whose theme this year was “Superheroes”, was organized by the Monaco City Hall in partnership with the Entreparents Network.

“A real success, it attracted participants of all ages for an end of day filled with entertainment and festivities,” states a recent press release from the Monaco City Hall.

The free entertainment included stilt walkers, creative workshops, balloon sculptors, magicians, makeup and tattoo stands. Families and children enjoyed the celebration in a lively and musical atmosphere. A drum band created a thumping rhythm for everyone to dance to. Dressed in neon colours, the band brought eye-catching excitement to the event.

“This carnival was important for the City Hall, which wants to preserve and promote festive traditions by reviving a celebration that had disappeared. Carnival is a moment of popular joy that spans generations, and its return in winter to Monaco strengthens this bond between residents. It is also a time for family and intergenerational gatherings, offering a unique opportunity for parents, children and grandparents to get together for a celebration designed for them,” said Axelle Amalberti Verdino, Deputy Mayor, in charge of Entertainment and Leisure.

History of Winter Carnival

Carnival (known as Shrovetide in certain places) is a festive tradition that has been taking place in many countries around the world for centuries. The word carnival is said to come from the Late Latin expression “carne levare”, which means “remove meat” signifying the approaching fasting during Lent. The Quebec Winter Carnival is one of the biggest winter-themed Carnivals in the world.
