International Children’s Rights Day

International Children’s Rights Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the International Convention adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20 November 1989, is a major event that is organised every year by the Department of Education, Youth and Sport.

It aims to raise awareness among pupils from schools in the Principality of the situation of children throughout the world whose basic rights are not respected, and raise money for Monegasque partner humanitarian associations to help them carry out their missions of aid and solidarity.

The highlights of the 2018 event will be as follows:

–        Stands with activities and information

  • Friday 16 November (10 p.m. to 7 p.m.) in the gallery of the Métropole,
  • Tuesday 20 November in the Carrefour shopping mall (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.), and La Condamine Market (8 p.m. to 2 p.m.)

The public will be able to buy stamps, bracelets, pin brooches, diaries, bags, etc., featuring the International Children’s Rights Day logo.

–        “Issue” Dance Show by the Eugénie Andrin Company at the Princess Grace Theatre, on Tuesday 20 November, at 7.30 p.m., preceded from 7 p.m. by themed activities on the forecourt.

This work addresses the theme of freedom through a dialogue between the dancers and seven suspended doors, which open onto a quest, with many obstacles along the way.

When pushed open, these doors reveal fears, abysses and illusions, as well as dreams, hopes and truth.

Tickets:  Princess Grace Theatre – Adults : 20 euros – Children : 12 euros

–        Lecture and debate moderated by Mr. Pascal Plisson, director of the documentary film “Sur le chemin de l’école”(“On the Way to School”), in the Auditorium of Monaco’s Vocational and Catering School (Lycée Technique et Hôtelier de Monaco) on Thursday 22 November at 7.30 p.m., preceded, from 7 p.m., by thematic activities on the forecourt.

Mr. Plisson will discuss inequalities in access to education for the world’s children.

Admission free

Some of the money raised will be donated to AMADE, which is presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Caroline of Hanover, as well as to partner Monegasque humanitarian associations.  These associations will also make it possible to help pupils and students residing in the Principality or in neighbouring towns who are in very difficult situations.

264 million children work, 120 million children live on the streets, 121 million children do not go to school, 9 million children die of hunger before the age of 5 and one billion children do not have access to safe drinking water.

Together, we can help to ensure that children’s rights are always better respected throughout the world.
