The Cannes Film Festival has announced that American actor, director, and producer Robert De Niro will be honoured with the prestigious Honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremonyof its 78th edition on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. This accolade recognizes De Niro’s exceptional contributions to cinema over his illustrious career. The following day, on Wednesday May 14, he will meet festival-goers for a masterclass on the stage of the Debussy Theatre.
De Niro’s relationship with Cannes spans decades. In 1976, hestarred in two films presented at the festival: Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1900 and Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, the latter winning the Palme d’Or. His portrayal of Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver remains one of his most iconic roles.
Beyond acting, De Niro has contributed to the film industry as a director and producer. In 2011, he served as the President of the Jury at Cannes, further cementing his influence and commitmentto global cinema.
