In 1454, through an astute move, before his death, Lord Jean I of Monaco had written the «Rules of Succession» that would guide the state’s destiny. By these rules he had assured that Monaco would always be ruled by a male heir of the house of Grimaldi.
For thirty years from 1701 to 1731 following the death of Prince Louis I, Monaco came under the rule of his son Antoine I. Antoine would prove to be a wise statesman and an accomplished military strategist.
