Grimaldi Family

Rainier II became Lord of Monaco on June 29, 1352, and at first ruled alongside his father Charles I, his brother Gabriele et great-uncle Lord Antonio. Around the same time, in 1350, Jean II was crowned King of France.

Charles I, Lord of Monaco is often seen as the founder of the Grimaldi dynasty.  And he was the first ruler to establish Monaco as an independent state under Grimaldi rule. Charles I was the eldest son of Rainier I and his first wife, Salvatica del Carretto.
