First Look at Monaco’s 2023 Census…
The Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE) recently published the first results of the 2023 Population Census, using to a new method of calculation based on registers.
The preliminary results show that Monaco has a population of just over 38,300 inhabitants and that less than a quarter of the population is Monegasque.
As of 31 December 2023, Monaco’s resident population is 38,367. Monaco’s population growth compared to the last General Census of 2016 is 2.8%.
Monegasque residents make up 23.9% of the population
The results, in descending order are:
-Major foreign residents: 24,772 (64.6%)
-Monegasque residents: 9,179 (23.9%)
-3-17 year old foreigners attending school in Monaco: 3,098 (8.1%)
-Estimate of foreigners 0-17 years remaining in Monaco: 785 (2%)
– 0-2 year old foreigners born in Monaco: 533 (1.4%)
Yearly census instead of one every eight years…
The IMSEE published the first results of the 2023 census using a new “register-based” calculation method, which will make it possible to know the number of inhabitants, their dwellings and their main characteristics on an annual basis from now on. This method has set a new precedent and a new census will be calculated every year, instead of once every eight years.
According to the IMSEE’s report, the breakdown and total resident population was calculated using different registers from three administrative sources: Monaco mayor’s office for Monegasque nationals and births in Monaco; the Directorate of Public Security for Major Foreign Residents (Senior Cards Data) and the Directorate of National Education, Youth and Sports for 3-17 year olds living abroad in Monaco.
The remaining population of foreign minors aged 3 to 17 years who are not in school in the Principality and foreign children born outside Monaco between 2021 and 2023, was estimated on the basis of data from the 2016 Census.
